Event: Black Lit Weekend
Host: Greater Lansing Independent Booksellers Association (GLIBA)
Date: August 16
Location: Newark, NJ
Role: Guest Speaker
Sometimes the most meaningful opportunities come with very little notice.
When you get the call three days before a conference weekend asking you to step in and speak, you don’t hesitate. You say yes, you prepare, and you show up ready to pour into the room.
That’s exactly what happened at Black Lit Weekend, a powerful, community-driven event hosted by the Greater Lansing Independent Booksellers Association (GLIBA). The weekend was designed to celebrate, amplify, and support Black voices in the literary world—bringing together booksellers, authors, publishers, and community leaders for connection, learning, and inspiration.
The Session: From Aisles to Algorithms
My session, “From Aisles to Algorithms: How Bookstores Can Outshine Online Giants with Smart Marketing & AI,” focused on helping independent bookstores compete strategically in an increasingly digital marketplace.
During the session, I shared actionable strategies for:
Standing out against Amazon and other online giants through brand positioning and community storytelling
Leveraging AI tools to save time, streamline operations, and elevate marketing efforts
Driving foot traffic through events, partnerships, and local engagement
Building authentic loyalty by creating experiences that keep readers connected and coming back
Independent bookstores offer something online giants can’t replicate human connection, cultural relevance, and curated experiences. This session focused on how marketing strategy and technology can support—not replace—that value.
Gratitude & Community
A special thank you to Kelly Outing for always thinking of me, saying my name in rooms, and creating opportunities rooted in genuine support. Advocacy like that makes a lasting difference.
Deep gratitude to Onikah Asamoa-Caesar for the invitation and for producing an incredible weekend that showcased the brilliance, resilience, and impact of Black literature and community.
Why This Work Matters
Moments like these are a reminder of why visibility and storytelling matter. Bookstores don’t just sell books they sell experiences, preserve culture, and foster connection. When we equip them with strategy, tools, and clarity, we help ensure those stories continue to thrive.
